Digital Imaging Available at HMC

X-ray film in Hancock Medical Center’s imaging department
has been replaced by digital images from a new state-of-the-
    art system.

The Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)
allows the simultaneous review of multiple images retrieved
from diagnostic equipment in a digital format. Studies such
as MRI, CT, ultrasound, bone scans, x-rays and nuclear
medicine are digitized and stored on an image server, which
can be accessed on the hospital’s dedicated PACS computer network.

Physicians can retrieve the images from any location on the hospital network or from their offices via Internet. The new technology offers tremendous benefit to the medical center
by eliminating the need for film developing and storage, and improving access to studies, according to Administrator Hal
    W. Leftwich, DBA, FACHE.

The end result of this computerization is a diagnostic imaging modality interfaced to a radiology information system and
hospital information system, helping create a single, easily accessible patient record.

The creation of an electronic health record is a designated
National Patient Safety Goal, as outlined by the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
    (JCAHO).
