HMC Auxiliary VolunteersMore Information
Hancock Medical Center Auxiliary volunteers give freely of their time and talents in an environment where small acts of kindness make a big difference. Since 1986 volunteers have contributed more than 138,800 hours to the hospital.

The HMC volunteers were recognized during an annual luncheon held in their honor at Casino Magic’s Bay Tower Hotel. In 2004, cumulative service topped 13,200 hours. A highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of a $20,000 check to the hospital Foundation.

The monies represent proceeds from the hospital gift shop and vending sales. “Our volunteers staff, stock and manage a gift shop that rivals any specialty store,” said Leftwich. “The seasonally decorated shop windows are the first thing visitors see in the hospital’s front lobby; the second thing is usually a volunteer’s friendly smile.”

These generous men and women come to Hancock Medical Center from varied backgrounds. There are retired teachers, nurses, engineers, business owners and homemakers who share a common desire to help others. They perform clerical tasks, take blood pressures and staff information desks among other duties.

Pediatric patients receive goodie bags with age-appropriate play activities assembled by auxiliary members. They host an annual Christmas party for hospital staff, and volunteer at the annual community health fair and other special events. Currently, the auxiliary has approximately 50 active members who volunteer Monday through Friday, as well as several associate members.
