ROAD TO RECOVERY
Pfizer, Inc, the world’s largest research-based pharmaceutical company, presented representatives from Hancock Medical Center and the Hancock Medical Center Foundation with a check for $100,000 during a joint press conference March 13.
The donation is part of Pfizer, Inc.’s $1 million pledge to support recovery efforts focused on restoring health care services and infrastructure along the Gulf Coast. Hancock Medical Center plans to use the donation to bridge the gap between the costs of replacing damaged equipment and the amount of reimbursement from FEMA.
“We have not forgotten you or your health care needs,” said Robert Mallett, Senior Vice President of Pfizer Corporate Affairs. “Pfizer is pleased to help fill the health care services gap that was created by Hurricane Katrina and it is our hope that Pfizer’s support will allow Hancock County to continue to provide critical health care services to those in need.”
During Hurricane Katrina, the hospital’s first floor received almost four feet of water, destroying much of the equipment. Hancock Medical Center was forced to close its doors for five weeks while repairs were being completed.
“Pfizer’s generous donation will help us replace diagnostic imaging equipment to provide our community with state-of-the-art technology,” Hal Leftwich, the hospital’s chief executive officer, said.
During the press conference, attended by local, state, and national officials, United States Congressman Gene Taylor, who represents Mississippi’s Fourth Congressional District where the hospital is located, commended the staff for their commitment to providing healthcare to the citizens of Hancock County.
Leftwich commented on the hospital’s dedication to the citizens of Hancock County.
“Like all of Mississippi’s health care providers, Hancock Medical Center has made a commitment to providing quality care to this community,” Leftwich said. “This gift will help us continue and rebuild that great tradition."
