Safety

The security staff at Hancock Medical Center work around the clock to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and employees.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT – The hospital is a member of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) and regularly participates in regional and local exercises in conjunction with Coast hospitals, county and Mississippi Emergency Management Agencies, military and ambulance services personnel. In doing so, the hospital is able to implement and test the effectiveness of our Incident Command System. Employees practice their skills responding rapidly and efficiently to simulated disaster situations to ensure the hospital is able to serve the needs of the community in any situation. The hospital’s disaster system is routinely activated in preparation for hurricanes.
SMOKING – The use of tobacco products is strictly prohibited throughout Hancock Medical Center buildings and grounds. We appreciate your cooperation.
FIRE DRILLS – For your protection, the hospital conducts emergency drills regularly. If a drill occurs when you are here, please remain in your room and do not become alarmed. The hospital staff will provide appropriate direction in the event of an emergency.
OXYGEN – Special regulations are in effect in areas where patients receive oxygen.
MEDICATIONS – All medications you take while in the hospital are prescribed by your doctor, dispensed by the hospital pharmacy and administered by a nurse. Patients are not permitted to administer their own drugs or keep personal medications at the bedside.
WHEELCHAIRS – Wheelchairs are available on all nursing units, but getting in and out of them without assistance may be hazardous. Please request help from a hospital staff member.
CELLULAR PHONES – The use of cellular phones and other wireless communication devices is discouraged.
VALUABLE OR LOST ITEMS – Patients are asked not to bring items of value to the hospital. If you do bring a valuable item, it should be deposited in the safe in the registration area. If you lose something, please notify your nurse immediately. Check your room thoroughly for all personal belongings when you are discharged. Unclaimed items are turned in to the Housekeeping Department, where they are kept for 30 days. To inquire about lost articles, call ext. 8681 or 467-8681.
